MSE 222: INTRODUCTION TO MATERIALS SCIENCE
Every Fall Semester

Catalog Data: MSE 222. Introduction to Materials Science (3), I, Introduction to the structure of materials and how structure influences properties. Elementary crystallography, crystal chemistry, and microstructure effects are covered. Examples are taken from all classes of materials: metals, semiconductors, ceramics, polymers, glasses, and composites.

Text Books:

The Structure of Materials, by S.M. Allen and E.L. Thomas, J. Wiley, NY, 1999.

Instructor:

Dunbar P. Birnie, III, Professor

Prerequisites:

  1. Freshman Chemistry: (Either Chem 103b or MSE 110)
  2. CHEM 103A
  3. Consult department before enrolling

Overall Educational Goal:

Broad exposure to the connection between structure and properties in materials of all types. Utilization of three-dimensional visualization skills in understanding the effect of structure on properties. The class includes a strong immersion into the importance of crysal structure in determing a wide variety of physical properties. Exposure to crystallography principles and their use in understanding different physical properties. Examples chosen from a wide variety of materials types: metals, semiconductors, ceramics, polymers, etc.

Topics:

Basic Crystallography, connection between bonding and structure, association between bonding type and various properties. Examination of slip, dislocations, twinning, point defects, diffusion, surface energies, ferroelectricity, and other strongly crystal structure related properties. Exploration of symmetry relationships and their effect on properties. Introduction to tensors as a mathematical way of representing directionally dependent properties.

Class Requirements:

ABET Category Content:

Engineering Science, 3 units
